Sustainability education in FoED: exploring the diversity in teaching and learning

Achieving a sustainable future is the greatest challenge that humanity currently faces. Our commitment to all the facets of sustainability is central to Taumata Teitei Vision 2030. Despite the importance of Sustainability and our commitment to it, it remains unclear how Sustainability is being taught across the curriculum in the Faculty of Engineering and Design (FoED). A comprehensive curriculum map of sustainability teaching in FoED does not yet exist. Anecdotal evidence from staff and students suggests that Sustainability education in the FoED is piecemeal, often repetitive, and surface-level, while records of sustainability teaching are inconsistent. There is a need for a benchmarking exercise to map the breadth and depth of Sustainability teaching across FoED. Sustainability is a rich and complex topic strongly rooted in culture and worldview. This project does not simply seek to audit Sustainability teaching and material covered across FoED, but also to explore the diversity of worldviews and the expression of sustainability presented to our students.
